What Most People Get Wrong on Social Media

When most business owners decide to get on social media, they expect to be able to start posting right away. They sit down in front of their computer and try to come up with an idea to post in a few minutes. This is where most business owners go wrong when it comes to social media. Not only is this frustrating and wastes hours of valuable time you could be spending on work that needs your expertise, it typically leads to non-engaging posts. And then social media gets labeled as a waste of time.

If you find that you’re constantly hitting a wall when it comes to now knowing what to post, it’s likely because you don’t have a clear brand for your business. Without a clear brand, it’s hard to know how you talk about yourself, who your audience is, and how best to promote your product or service.

The good news is that you can easily turn things around by getting more clarity around your brand. And once you do, you’ll never wonder what to post, say or share in your social media content again.

It all starts by getting clear how you want to talk about yourself and show up on social media.

Use these questions to develop a personality for your brand and better tell your story.

  1. What is your mission? How do you help people?

  2. Why do you do what you do? Why did you start your business? What gets you out of bed in the morning and keeps you going?

  3. What are your brand values? What core beliefs do you hold? These impact everything from who you hire to how you treat customers.

  4. What are your brand differentiators? What sets you apart from your competitors? What makes you unique? What makes you stand out among the crowd? Why do people choose YOU over someone else?

  5. Who is your target audience? Who is your dream client or customer? What are their pain points or biggest problems they face? How do you solve them?

Answering these questions will help you bring your brand to life and give you a never ending list of ideas of what to post. You’ll walk away with posts that are on-brand and answer the questions that your ideal clients are asking.

These are just a few of the questions I ask my clients when helping them with their brand strategy. If you struggle to answer them, it may be because you’re too close to your brand and your business.
